Five years ago, I stepped away from a secure role and set out on my own with little more than a laptop and a plan to give it a year. I knew it meant burning through my savings and taking a huge risk, but I also knew I needed the freedom to shape something different. I never imagined that one decision would grow into a thriving business with a strong team, trusted clients, and an established reputation across multiple jurisdictions. What began as a leap into the unknown has become a five year journey shaped by client trust, teamwork, and values that guide everything we do.
2020 – Taking the leap
In 2020 I made the decision to step away from my role as a director of a regulated trust and company business. On paper it was secure and prestigious, but it was not the right fit for me. I wanted more freedom to travel, to set my own hours, and to create something that reflected my values.
It was never about working less. In fact, I work harder than I ever have, but now I spend most of my time doing work that I love and building a business I truly believe in. With just a laptop and determination, Virteffic began.
The name came from “virtual” and “efficient”, capturing exactly what I wanted the business to stand for. In those early months I supported a small group of clients with minutes, company secretarial services, and administrative support. Each project helped refine the model and confirm that this new way of working could succeed.
2021 – Building the team
2021 was the year I welcomed Virteffic’s first employee, a milestone that marked the beginning of the team we are today. From that point the business continued to grow steadily, attracting skilled professionals who shared our values and wanted to work in a different way.
What makes me most proud is that our approach to flexibility and trust continues to attract strong talent. Even when we are not actively recruiting, we receive CVs on a weekly basis from experienced people who want to be part of Virteffic.
We also took a different approach to the way we worked. Virteffic’s model was remote first, flexible, and built on mutual trust. Team members were able to set their own schedules and work in ways that suited their lives and supported their wellbeing. We believe people do their best work when they feel respected, trusted, and supported. This has created a positive, collaborative culture that puts people first.
That year we also invested in secure systems and IT support, achieving Cyber Essentials certification. This gave clients confidence that we could combine flexibility with the highest standards of confidentiality and efficiency.
2022 – Expansion into Guernsey and new services
By 2022 Virteffic was supporting an expanding number of clients, including larger boards, committees, and regulated entities. This was also the year we expanded into Guernsey, strengthening our presence across the Channel Islands and supporting new clients in that market.
Our services broadened to include board effectiveness reviews, governance training, and operational support. We also launched our first training courses for company secretaries and minute takers, which remain a popular part of our offering today.
2023 – Recognition and stronger partnerships
In 2023, Virteffic’s discreet, professional, and values led approach was recognised across the industry. Word of mouth referrals and long term relationships reinforced our reputation as a trusted governance partner.
This was also the year that we grew our presence in Guernsey further by establishing a local team. Having team members based on the island meant that we could attend the many board and committee meetings held there face to face, while continuing to provide our trademark discreet and efficient remote support. Today, we are proud to support businesses across the Channel Islands, ensuring clients in both Jersey and Guernsey receive the high quality, flexible service they need.
We also took on more long term secondments and complex projects, supporting regulated firms, law firms, start ups, family offices, and charities across Jersey, Guernsey, the UK, and the Cayman Islands. Internally, we continued to invest in team collaboration, wellbeing, and development, ensuring our people remained motivated and equipped to deliver outstanding service to clients.
2024 – Growth and leadership
In 2024 Virteffic continued to evolve. New service lines were launched, the team grew again, and the brand deepened its presence across key markets. Our flexible working model attracted talented professionals who value autonomy and work life balance, strengthening both capacity and capability across the team.
A defining moment at the end of the year was the establishment of a senior leadership team. This step was essential to support continued growth, ensuring that leadership and decision making could be shared more widely across the business. It marked a shift in how we operate, creating additional structure, resilience, and future focused planning while still keeping the flexibility and trust that have always defined us.
The creation of a leadership team has enabled us to delegate more effectively, invest in mentoring, and provide clearer development pathways for our people. It was an important change that set us up for the next phase of growth.
2025 – Looking ahead and reflecting
As we move through our fifth year, we are taking a moment to pause and reflect on all that we have achieved. Growth has been exciting, but we know it is just as important to look after the clients and team members who mean so much to us.
Being established for five years is more than just a milestone. It means that we now have embedded policies and procedures, secure working environments, trusted team members, and the benefit of experience. We know what works best when offering remote support, and how to integrate seamlessly with in house teams to make their lives easier.
Looking ahead, our focus is on maintaining the quality, trust, and relationships that have brought us this far, while continuing to evolve our services to meet the changing needs of modern business.
