Embarking on the role of a senior virtual assistant with Virteffic has been quite the learning journey, especially as a mother balancing work and family life. Working remotely from Guernsey, alongside my Jersey colleagues, has taught me a lot, both about my profession and about myself. Here are some of the key lessons I’ve learned along the way:
- Mastering Communication and Tech Tools – Working remotely means relying heavily on communication tools and technology. Mastering Microsoft Teams and other tech tools has been crucial in ensuring effective communication with my Jersey colleagues and our clients. Clear and concise communication has been more important than ever, helping me stay connected and productive.
- Time Management and Prioritisation – The flexibility of remote work brings its own challenges, particularly in managing time effectively. As a mother, balancing work and family responsibilities requires careful prioritisation. I’ve learned to prioritise tasks by urgency and importance, which helps me manage my workload without feeling overwhelmed. Keeping a regular schedule and setting boundaries has been key to maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
Building Relationships
Despite the virtual nature of my role, building relationships with coworkers and clients has been a priority. Regular check-ins, virtual coffee breaks, and celebrating milestones have helped create a sense of community. These interactions have made me feel connected to the team.

- Adapting to Change and Continuous Learning – The dynamic virtual work environment demands adaptability and a commitment to continuous learning. Over the past year, I’ve embraced opportunities to learn new skills, whether it’s mastering new systems or adapting to our clients’ preferred styles. This has not only improved my professional skills but also my ability to handle change.
- Improving Written Communication – In a remote setup, written communication becomes the primary mode of interaction. I’ve worked on enhancing my ability to write concisely, clearly, and in a well-structured manner. This skill has been crucial in preventing misunderstandings and ensuring smooth operations.
- Staying Motivated and Disciplined – Without the traditional office setup, staying motivated and disciplined can be challenging. I’ve found that setting personal goals, celebrating small wins, and maintaining a positive mindset are essential to staying motivated. Regular breaks, a dedicated workspace, and a healthy work-life balance have also contributed to sustaining high levels of productivity and well-being.
- The Importance of Feedback – Lastly, seeking and providing feedback has been a cornerstone of my professional growth. Constructive feedback from colleagues has helped me identify areas for improvement and refine my skills.
Looking back on my first year with Virteffic, I’m grateful for all the lessons I learned. The role pushed me to innovate, adapt, and succeed in the ever-changing remote work world. I’m excited to keep supporting our Virteffic team, using these lessons to work better and achieve great results.
