Happy New Year from all of us at Virteffic! We hope you had a fantastic time celebrating with friends and loved ones and had the opportunity to get some rest over the festive season.
We all know that getting back to reality can be a bit of a shock to the system and takes that little bit more effort after party season! For whatever reason, most of us just can’t help but jump on the ‘New Year, New Me’ resolution bandwagon most of the time, often overreaching and ultimately ending up disappointed with ourselves when we don’t manage to keep on top of the ten different resolutions we set for ourselves!
Well this year, we’ve decided to take a different approach. We won’t be overstretching ourselves or being sucked in by fads and promises of quick results. We’re going to play the long game and really focus on self-care and activities that will have a positive effect on our lives either short term or long term. Here are just a few things we’re going to try to kick start a successful year!
Build Healthy Habits
This is a really simple one to focus on, pick two or three things you’re already doing or that you enjoy which benefit your health, such as doing yoga once a week, getting 7-8 hours sleep a night or just drinking enough water each day. Many studies suggest it takes just 21 days to build a habit and these small changes can have a huge impact on your overall wellbeing! Be sure to track your progress in your notes on your phone, or even download a habit tracker app such as Streaks or Habitica.
Spring Clean Your Space
Yes, it may still be winter, but it’s always a good time for spring clean! Having a clear out of your physical space and donating or discarding items you no longer need can do wonders for your mental health. Not to mention a clean and organized space is likely to leave you feeling accomplished and in a productive state of mind.
Declutter Your Mind
Just like you benefit from clearing your physical space, your mind will also benefit from a tidy up. Take some time to practice mindfulness or meditation to really clear your thoughts, it could be just 5 minutes when you wake or before you go to sleep, maybe even on your lunch break, there’s always time for self-care! If you find you need to write down your thoughts, consider trying journalling, it can be a fun and expressive way to clear your mind whilst also tracking progress.
Learn or Try Something New
I have a long list of things of my phone that I’d like to try, some are very obscure, others are really simple! I continually add to it and haven’t put any pressure on myself in terms of a timeline to complete the list. It could be as simple as trying out a new restaurant or as ambitious as skydiving, either way, I always feel a sense of achievement when I tick something off the list and it’s a definite mood booster. Variety is the spice of life, after all!
Pamper Yourself
Ditch the phone and have a digital detox whilst you indulge in some traditional self-care. Throw on a face / hair mask, light some candles and enjoy an herbal tea. Book yourself in for a manicure or massage, head to the gym and take a sauna or stream room. Whatever it is that you consider real pamper treat, make time for it and enjoy it!
Get Social
You can’t beat spending time with friends and loved ones to boost your emotional wellbeing. Sharing experiences and talking about our lives with others has been proven by numerous studies to be a vital part of our mental and physical self-care. You could event join a local book club or hobby group to build new connections and tick off your something new activity at the same time!
There are so many different types of self-care, these can be mental, physical, social, spiritual or emotional and it’s important to remember that self-care in these areas will look completely different for each individual. However you decided to focus on your self-care, we hope you have a fabulous time doing it and a very successful 2024!
Sports, Social & Wellbeing (SSW) Committee
At Virteffic, the wellbeing of our staff is a top priority. Virteffic was set up to offer team members more flexible working hours and a better life-work balance.
Since we started to recruit and Virteffic grew into a team of more than just Tess, the focus has always been to look after and appreciate the team members. Our sports, social and well-being committee was set up early to help with this.
Working flexibly allows our team members to make time for their wellbeing and mindfulness on their schedule, and we have a monthly wellbeing topic focus to make sure we always keep it forefront in our minds.
