Self-Love: How to practice it and get the most out of it

Self-love can be a tricky subject to tackle, it used to be that it was often misunderstood as being selfish or narcissistic, but thankfully those days are far behind us! We’re fully embracing self-love as the necessity it is for a happy and healthy life, particularly as February is the perfect month to celebrate love!

So, what does self-love entail? Is it simply standing in front of the mirror and repeating daily affirmations to boost your confidence until they are fully ingrained in your mind? Well no, but it certainly won’t hurt to try a few daily affirmations!

Self-love is a lifelong commitment and encompasses many different aspects which will help you to lead a fulfilling and happy life. It’s about making sure you treat yourself with the same kindness and care you would treat your friends and loved ones.

If you’re new to self-care and wondering where to start, these are a few areas you could focus on to get you started.

Build a Vision Board

Start with an idea in your mind of where your self-love journey will take you, then put it all down on a vision board. Snip out images and quotes which reflect your goals and have fun piecing it all together on a physical or digital board. You can refer back to this throughout your self-love journey to keep you on track.

Embrace Your Body

You only have one and it’s pretty damn awesome! Your body accomplishes so much in a day and it’s so easy to take for granted. First of all, ditch the negative self-talk, your body is unique to you and the only one of its kind in the world, give it some praise! Second, make sure you keep it in good health, just like you take care of your car, ensure you give it the right tools and fuel to operate at its best, through regular exercise and a balanced diet.

Practice Compassion and Forgiveness

Holding on to negativity, regret and resentment can be very damaging to your mental health. Learn to forgive yourself for past mistakes, be kinder and more understanding towards yourself. Understanding that nobody is perfect will give you the space you need to make mistakes and see them as a positive opportunity to learn and develop. Apply this thinking to yourself and others and you’ll feel a huge weight lifted.

Set Boundaries

I cannot stress this enough! It is a life changing form of self-love. Saying yes to a dinner in a restaurant you really don’t like just because everyone else is going, is not going to make you happy. Consistently saying yes to more work to please your boss when you don’t have capacity is going to leave you burnt out. Learning to recognise your boundaries and express them in a kind and constructive way is one of the greatest self-care tools you can learn. Learning some key boundary phrases (use Google for examples) to use in uncomfortable situations is also invaluable!

Celebrate the Small Stuff and be Grateful

No matter how small they may be, any achievement should be celebrated. Take the time to appreciate your strengths and the steps you’ve taken to achieve your accomplishments; it’ll really build your self-esteem. Practice showing gratitude for the small things in your day to day life, write them down if it helps, and you’ll soon find that positivity and gratitude become a normal part of your daily self-love routine.

Practicing self-love can have so many benefits, such as increasing your self-confidence, happiness and wellbeing. The increase in your resilience and positive mental attitude as a result of practicing self-love will ultimately open up more opportunities in life, just remember that it is a lifelong journey and enjoy it!

Sports, Social & Wellbeing (SSW) Committee

At Virteffic, the wellbeing of our staff is a top priority. Virteffic was set up to offer team members more flexible working hours and a better life-work balance.

Since we started to recruit and Virteffic grew into a team of more than just Tess, the focus has always been to look after and appreciate the team members. Our sports, social and well-being committee was set up early to help with this.

Working flexibly allows our team members to make time for their wellbeing and mindfulness on their schedule, and we have a monthly wellbeing topic focus to make sure we always keep it forefront in our minds.
