As the year draws to a close, I’ve been reflecting on the journey of building Virteffic over the past four and a half years. What began as an idea has grown into a thriving business, made possible by the support of an exceptional team, our clients, and those who believed in the vision from the start.
One thing I hear quite often is, “I’d love to start my own business – being my own boss sounds amazing!” And while I wouldn’t trade this journey for anything, the reality is more complex than it might seem from the outside. It’s rewarding, yes – but it also demands resilience, adaptability and a willingness to ride the ups and downs.
Here are 10 truths I’ve learned that I hope offer insight and encouragement for anyone thinking about starting their own business:
💙 Your time is YOUR responsibility. Flexibility is a benefit, but it means managing your own schedule, juggling client deadlines and expectations – often at unsociable hours.
💙 You’ll wear every hats. From CEO to admin, marketer to IT support, you’ll play every role in the early days – even the ones that don’t come naturally.
💙 Success looks different. There’s rarely applause or recognition, but the quiet wins are just as meaningful when you know how hard you worked to get there.
💙 It can be lonely. Without colleagues to share the day-to-day, motivation can dip – but it also builds self-reliance and clarity about your direction.
💙 Growth isn’t linear. Setbacks happen. They might feel like failures at the time, but they’re often what lead you to your next breakthrough.
💙 Work and life blend. When you care deeply about what you do, switching off is hard. The lines blur – and that’s not always a bad thing.
💙 You’ll make a lot of decisions. ome small, some big – all yours to make. It can be tiring, but it’s also empowering.
💙 Doubt creeps in. Even with experience, imposter syndrome can show up – especially when you step into new territory.
💙 The pressure is real. Every choice affects not just you, but your clients and your team. That weight brings responsibility and growth.
💙 You’ll care more than you imagined. The wins and setbacks feel personal because they are. Your business becomes part of who you are.
The Rewarding Side of the Journey
Running Virteffic has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life. I’ve learned more than I thought possible – not just about business, but about resilience, leadership and the strength of a shared purpose.
Watching our team grow, seeing the impact of our work, and supporting our clients’ success reminds me every day why it’s worth it. It’s not easy, but it’s deeply meaningful.
Looking Ahead
As I look towards 2025, I’m grateful for the lessons, the support, and the challenges that have shaped this journey. If you’re thinking about starting a business, know that it won’t always be smooth but if you believe in your vision, it can be one of the most rewarding paths you’ll ever take.
Thank you to everyone who’s been part of this chapter – my brilliant team, our clients, and those who’ve cheered us on from near or far.
Wishing you a happy New Year, and a 2025 filled with purpose, progress and possibility.
All the best,
Tess
