Preparation, Performance and the Power of Support

Preparation, Performance and the Power of Support

There are weeks when my focus is entirely on board packs, agendas, governance papers, and client deadlines. Then there are weeks that remind me of the importance of stepping outside our professional routines and challenging ourselves in different ways.

Recently, I travelled to Sweden to take part in the Göteborgsvarvet Half Marathon, widely recognised as the world’s largest half marathon. With around 60,000 runners taking part each year, it is an event that creates an atmosphere unlike anything I have experienced before.

Crossing the finish line was a proud moment, but as with many achievements, the race itself was only a small part of the story.

Success starts long before the event

Whether we are preparing for a board meeting, launching a new business initiative, or training for a half marathon, success is rarely determined on the day itself.

It is shaped by the preparation that takes place beforehand.

For me, that preparation involved early mornings, training runs in all weather conditions, planning nutrition, building routines, and maintaining the discipline to keep going even when motivation was lacking.

The same principle applies in business. Strong governance does not happen by accident. Effective meetings do not happen because people simply turn up on the day. They are the result of preparation, planning, organisation, and consistent effort behind the scenes.

The work that no one sees is often what makes the biggest difference.

Performance is built through consistency

One of the biggest lessons running continues to teach me is that performance is not about perfection.

It is about consistency.

There were training sessions that felt great and others that felt difficult. Some weeks went exactly to plan, and others required flexibility and adjustment. What mattered was continuing to move forward.

The same is true in professional life. Whether you are building a business, leading a team, serving on a board, or developing your career, progress is rarely linear. There will always be challenges, setbacks, competing priorities, and moments of doubt.

The organisations and individuals who perform well over the long term are often those who continue showing up, learning, adapting, and improving incrementally.

Small actions repeated consistently often deliver the greatest results.

The power of support

While preparation and discipline are important, one of the most memorable aspects of the Göteborgsvarvet Half Marathon was the support.

Throughout the route, crowds lined the streets cheering on complete strangers. Music played from every corner of the city. Volunteers offered encouragement and assistance. Fellow runners supported one another through difficult stretches of the course.

The collective energy created something remarkable. It was a powerful reminder that people achieve more when they feel supported.

In business, we sometimes focus heavily on individual performance, but success is rarely achieved alone. Behind every successful project, board meeting, business, or career milestone is usually a network of people offering guidance, encouragement, expertise, and support.

At Virteffic, this is something I see every day. Whether supporting our clients through complex governance challenges or supporting one another as a team, collaboration often enables better outcomes than any individual could achieve alone.

What this experience reminded me

The race reinforced three lessons that are equally relevant in business and life:

  • Preparation creates confidence.
  • Consistency drives performance.
  • Support helps people achieve more than they could alone.

These lessons are simple, but they are often the foundations of meaningful success.

As I write this, I am still feeling the effects of the race and recovering from the challenge. However, I am also feeling grateful. Grateful for the experience, the opportunity to participate, and the people who supported me throughout the journey.

Sometimes the finish line is not the most important part of the story.

Sometimes the real value lies in everything that happened before you got there.

All the best,

Tess
