From Virtual and Efficient to Governance in Practice

Virteffic team celebrating six years of governance and company secretarial support

Six years ago, Virteffic began as a broad remote support business during the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, it has evolved into a specialist governance and company secretarial team. This is the story of how our clients helped shape that journey and why we continue to invest in what comes next.

Six years ago, in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, Virteffic began with a very different question from the one we are asking today. Having left my role as a director of a regulated firm, I decided to establish my own business. Remote working was suddenly central to how organisations operated and, without knowing exactly where the new business would lead, I gave myself a year to find out.

The original Virteffic proposition was deliberately broad. Even our name reflected the environment in which we started, combining two ideas that seemed particularly relevant at the time: virtual and efficient. It did not take long, however, for our clients to help us find our direction.

Finding our direction

Minute writing, company secretarial support and governance work quickly became the services clients requested most often. They were also the areas in which my own professional experience was strongest.

As demand increased, I faced a choice: remain comfortable with the workload I had built, or invest in creating something more substantial. I chose to invest. The first Virteffic employee joined, followed by another and then another, and we deliberately recruited professionals whose backgrounds and experience complemented the work our clients were asking us to undertake.

Looking back, one of the most rewarding parts of the journey has been watching the business evolve from a one-person operation into a team of experienced governance and company secretarial professionals. While much about Virteffic has changed over the last six years, our focus on quality, relationships and practical support has remained consistent.

Today, our team supports Boards, committees, governance teams, regulated firms and other organisations through flexible governance resource and company secretarial support. Our direction was not established through a branding exercise. It emerged through the work our clients trusted us to undertake.

That distinction remains important today. Virteffic continues to work flexibly and remotely, but virtual describes how we work. It does not define what we do. What we provide is experienced, flexible company secretarial and governance support.

Over recent months, we have taken steps to ensure our branding and terminology more accurately reflect the business Virteffic has become. While the underlying work has remained largely unchanged, it felt important that our language properly represents the governance and company secretarial expertise that sits at the heart of our services today.

As we celebrate six years, we are also looking ahead, because 2026 has been another important year of investment.

Investing in our people

For a professional services business, quality ultimately depends on people. As Virteffic has developed, we have continued to invest in recruitment, learning, knowledge-sharing and professional development.

The Virteffic Academy has brought greater structure to our internal learning programme, helping our team continue to develop their governance knowledge and practical skills. Alongside this, members of the team participate in external training, professional events and wider industry conversations.

Remaining current increasingly means understanding not only developments in governance and regulation, but also how technology is changing the environments in which Boards and governance teams operate. Artificial intelligence is an obvious example. Our approach is not to treat technology as a substitute for professional expertise, but to understand how it can be used responsibly to support quality and efficiency while keeping human judgement central.

Investing in technology

A flexible operating model needs dependable technology behind it. During 2026, we have continued to invest in our technology, systems and cyber security, including a significant refresh of our equipment and our ongoing annual cyber review.

Much of this investment happens behind the scenes, as it should. Clients do not need to think about the infrastructure supporting our work, but they do need confidence that we can work efficiently, consistently and securely.

As technology continues to evolve, we will keep assessing where it can improve the way we work without compromising the judgement, confidentiality and professional oversight that good governance requires.

Investing in expertise

Our expertise has always been grounded in practical delivery. We work with Boards, committees and governance teams every week, giving us continual insight into the pressures organisations face and the practical realities of making governance work.

During 2026, we have invested significant time in capturing and developing that experience through governance resources, training and specialist services, including the continued development of our independent Board Effectiveness Review methodology and supporting guidance.

This represents an important part of Virteffic’s next stage, but flexible resource remains central to what we do. We continue to support organisations through recruitment gaps, workload peaks, Board-cycle pressures, governance projects and periods when additional experienced capacity is needed without permanent recruitment.

Alongside that resource, we are increasingly drawing on our team’s Boardroom, regulated-business and company secretarial experience to provide broader governance insight, training and specialist support. The two are closely connected because our governance expertise is grounded in practical delivery. We remain involved in governance work every day, ensuring that the insight and support we provide reflects the realities organisations face rather than purely theoretical concepts.

That principle sits at the heart of Virteffic’s Governance in Practice approach.

Investing in relationships

Perhaps the most important investment we continue to make is in relationships. Many of our strongest client relationships have developed over several years, and we increasingly want our conversations with clients to extend beyond the immediate piece of work in front of us.

During 2026, we introduced a more structured approach to regular client conversations, creating additional opportunities to seek feedback, understand what is changing within organisations and discuss emerging governance or resource requirements.

Some of the most useful conversations happen before there is an immediate instruction. They might be about an upcoming project, pressure on internal capacity, changes around a Board or committee, or simply a governance question that needs exploring.

We want Virteffic to be a team clients can call not only when they need something delivered, but when they value an experienced and practical sounding board.

Six years on

When Virteffic began in 2020, I could not have predicted exactly what the business would become. What I did know was that I was prepared to invest some savings, give the idea a year and see whether clients valued what I could offer.

They did, and in many respects they helped shape what came next. Six years later, we have much greater clarity about who we are and where we add the greatest value, but the willingness to keep investing has not changed.

We are investing in our people so they continue to develop, and in technology so our flexible model remains secure and dependable. We are investing in expertise so we can provide practical governance insight alongside experienced resource, and in relationships so our support continues to evolve around what clients actually need.

As Boards and governance teams face changing regulation, increasing expectations, new technologies and continuing pressure on resources, we expect those needs to keep evolving. So will we.

To our clients, team members, professional contacts and everyone who has supported Virteffic over the past six years, thank you. Your trust, feedback and conversations have helped shape the business we are today.

Six years on, we are proud of what has been built, but much more interested in what we can build next.
