This month we are focusing on drinking more water, which is always important but even more so during the hot summer months.
At Virteffic, the well-being of our staff is a top priority. Virteffic was set up as Tess wanted more flexible working hours and a better life-work balance. Everyone who works for Virteffic is in complete control of their own hours. This opens up opportunities for those who can’t or don’t want to work in a traditional 9-5 office role.
Since we started to recruit and Virteffic grew into a team of more than just Tess, the focus has always been to look after and appreciate the team members. Our sports, social and well-being committee was set up early to help with this.
Water
Did you know that your body is made up of approximately 60% water, with your lungs, brain, heart, liver, and kidneys being the wettest? No wonder we are told to make sure we are drinking enough water! But how much water is enough?
4-6 glasses of water is considered a good amount for a healthy individual, ensuring you keep an eye on hydration levels when engaging in physical activity where perspiration levels are high and when the temperature heats up.
Not drinking enough water a day has some pretty common side effects, such as headaches, dizziness, brain fog and low blood pressure. Everyone at some point is likely to have experienced one or a number of these side effects, so let’s see how we can keep on top of our water intake.
Tips for drinking more water
- Start your day with a glass of water. You don’t have to down it in 1 the moment you wake up but sip on it whilst you get ready for your day and, ideally, before you tuck into your morning coffee or tea.
- Carry a refillable water bottle with you. Having it on you and easily accessible will make you more inclined to drink from it.
- Not a fan of plain water? Jazz it up, throw in some lemon or lime slices. A handful of berries or a couple of drops of cordial.
- Set reminders on your phone. Every hour or every other hour, set a recurring reminder that will ping that says ‘Drink Water’ you would be surprised how much extra you drink just from doing this.
It’s not just water that keeps you hydrated. All beverages containing water contribute toward your daily needs. And it’s a myth that caffeinated beverages or those containing alcohol are dehydrating because they make you urinate. They do, but over the course of the day, the water from these beverages still leads to a net positive contribution to total fluid consumption. But remember, plain water is still king.
Water keeps every system in the body functioning properly, set yourself a challenge and keep a record of how many glasses or bottles you’ve consumed a day over the week. Share with your family, friends, or work colleagues; make it fun.
When we are over half made up of water, it’s always a good idea to keep the tank topped up!
