Over the past two weeks, we have been introducing three of the newest members of Team Virteffic: Christina Gates, Jasmine Fox and Brenna Dubois.
Their stories could hardly have started in more different places.
Christina brings experience developed across banking, trusts, corporate governance and Board environments, including experience as a director. Jasmine’s 12-year financial services career has taken her through finance, business analysis and systems implementation into private equity Committee support. Brenna is beginning her first professional role after graduating from the University of Liverpool with a first-class degree in psychology.
They are joining Tess and the wider Virteffic team, adding their own experience and perspectives to the knowledge already within the business.
Their individual stories are very different, but together they raise an interesting question:
How much does a team gain when its people have not all followed the same route?
There Is No Single Route into Governance
Governance careers are rarely identical. The skills needed to support a Board, understand a client, capture a complex discussion or improve the way something works can be developed in many different settings.
Christina brings the perspective of someone who has worked closely with Boards, supported them and also served as a director.
Jasmine has worked across several areas of financial services and brings experience of governance support from within a client organisation, most recently supporting Investment Committees and Portfolio Analysis Committees within private equity.
Brenna approaches the profession from a completely different starting point. Her psychology background has given her an interest in people, behaviour, motivation and how different environments influence the way people work.
They join an existing Virteffic team with its own range of governance, company secretarial and professional experience.
There is no single route into governance, and there does not need to be. Different career paths develop different strengths.
Experience Matters, but So Does Perspective
Experience builds professional judgement. People who have worked closely with Boards and organisations over many years develop context, confidence and an understanding of what effective governance looks like in practice. They learn to recognise which details matter, where further clarification may be needed and how formal governance processes operate in real organisations.
But a strong team also benefits from people who see the same situation differently.
Christina’s career has given her experience of governance from several perspectives, including supporting Boards, serving as a director and working with professional service providers from the client side.
Jasmine has experienced governance support from within a private equity organisation. She understands what it is like to receive professional support and the importance of responsiveness, accuracy and reliability.
Brenna is entering governance with knowledge from another discipline and a fresh perspective on people, working environments and how and why things are done.
And they are not bringing those perspectives in isolation. They are adding them to the experience already across Team Virteffic.
- Someone who has sat on a Board may look at an issue differently from someone supporting it.
- Someone who has received services as a client may notice something that the service provider takes for granted.
- Someone arriving from another discipline may ask a question that people who have spent years in the same profession no longer think to ask.
Those perspectives are not competing. They complement one another.
Governance relies on established processes and technical knowledge, but it also depends on communication, judgement, curiosity and an understanding of the people and organisations involved.
Learning Works in Both Directions
One of the most interesting observations from Brenna’s first few weeks at Virteffic came when she was asked what she had learned from meeting colleagues across the team.
She noticed something simple: people had arrived through different routes and brought different skills and strengths. In her words, that is when “the best ideas can come forward.”
It resonated because it reflects something we value across Team Virteffic.
Different experience creates opportunities to learn from one another.
Those earlier in their careers can learn from colleagues who have supported Boards, navigated complex situations and developed specialist knowledge over many years.
But learning does not only flow in one direction. Fresh perspectives can challenge assumptions. Experience from another sector can introduce a different approach. Someone who has been the client can help colleagues consider how a service feels from the other side. Someone new to an established process may simply ask why it is done that way at all.
That sharing of knowledge is important to the way Virteffic works. What matters is not expecting one person to know everything. It is building a team where people are comfortable asking questions, sharing what they know and recognising when somebody else brings experience or a perspective that could help.
More Than the Experience of One Person
That matters for our clients too. A traditional resourcing model can mean recruiting an individual into a company secretarial or governance role and relying heavily on the knowledge, experience, capacity and availability of that person.
Virteffic offers a different model. Our clients engage Virteffic and are supported by a wider governance team. Depending on the work required, that gives us the ability to draw on relevant knowledge and experience from across the business rather than viewing each engagement solely through the experience of one individual.
As Christina, Jasmine and Brenna join Tess and the existing team, that collective knowledge continues to broaden.
Our work takes us into different Boards, Committees, sectors and organisations, often with very different requirements. The wider team brings experience across governance, company secretarial work, Board and Committee support, professional minute writing, Board Effectiveness Reviews and related governance activity.
Different colleagues also bring experience from different sides of that work: supporting Boards, sitting on Boards, working within client organisations, financial services, operational environments and other professional disciplines.
For clients, the value is not simply having more people available. It is having a broader team to draw upon.
A Team Model Built Around Continuity and Collaboration
There is another practical benefit. Governance does not stop because somebody is on leave, unavailable or already committed elsewhere.
Building knowledge across a team can provide greater continuity than allowing important organisational knowledge to sit with one person. It also creates opportunities for colleagues to share experience, review work, learn from one another and bring the most relevant perspective to a particular requirement.
That does not mean every client needs every member of Team Virteffic involved in their work.
It means the person supporting a client is not working in professional isolation. They are part of a wider team with additional knowledge and experience to draw upon where needed.
That distinction matters.
The benefit of a team should not be measured simply by its size. It comes from how effectively its knowledge, judgement and experience are shared.
What That Means for Good Governance Support
Good governance support involves more than completing a series of administrative tasks. It requires people who understand the context surrounding the work, listen carefully, communicate clearly and recognise what matters throughout the wider governance cycle.
No one person needs to have every answer. What matters is having the right knowledge within the team, knowing when to draw on it and creating a culture where experience is shared rather than sitting with one individual.
The arrival of Christina, Jasmine and Brenna adds another layer to that collective capability. They bring new experience and perspectives, while also gaining access to the knowledge and experience of Tess and colleagues already established within Virteffic.
That exchange works both ways, and ultimately it strengthens the team our clients can call upon.
Different Paths. Different Strengths. One Team.
Christina, Jasmine and Brenna arrived at Virteffic through very different routes. Sharing their stories has been a reminder that a strong team is not built by finding people with identical CVs or expecting one person to hold every piece of knowledge.
It is built by bringing together people who have something to contribute, something to learn and a willingness to share both.
For our clients, that means the relationship is with Team Virteffic, supported by the combined knowledge, experience and perspectives within it.
Different paths. Different strengths. One Team Virteffic.
Work with Team Virteffic
All the best,
Tess
