Virteffic ‘walkers’ complete the Mencap South Coast Challenge

South Coast Challenge

Sunday, 21 May 2023, saw four members of the Virteffic team take on a 15-mile walk of the South Coast of Jersey, raising money for Mencap Jersey.

The 15-mile route started at La Rocque on the east coast of Jersey. We eagerly set off at 8.30 am in good spirits; the weather was kind to us, with glorious sunshine and a moderate breeze.

Reaching the first drinks station at Les Jardins de la Mer where we took a brief break to hydrate and refuel.

The next part of the walk took us along the ‘front’ towards St. Aubin; the ‘front’ was busy with walkers, runners, cyclists and families on their Sunday morning strolls, providing sufficient distraction from the challenge.

At St. Aubin, we decided to take a longer break to rest our tiring legs and again hydrate and refuel, knowing the walk would get harder from here on in as we were to face hills and the cliff paths!

Continuing, the route got more challenging as we walked through St. Aubin uphill onto Noirmont Point, along the cliff paths to Portlet Common, and down the rocky paths into St. Brelade’s Bay. Here we decided to walk across the beach, and we were met with many families enjoying a day at the beach.

Reaching La Moye point, we could see the finish at Corbiere, just a short distance to go; with tired legs, we dug deep for the energy to take on the steep descent followed by the steep ascent to the finish line, finishing at 2.30 pm.

Mission accomplished!

What a way to spend our Sunday! The walk certainly was more demanding than we imagined.

Working as virtual assistants, we work remotely, and whilst we have regular face-to-face and virtual meetings and catch-ups, it is different to spending your working day in an office sitting next to your colleagues. Thus walking for 6 + hours is likely the longest we have spent in each other’s company!

We learnt things about each other that we did not know, and it proved a great team bonding exercise.

Same time next year, girls?!?!

Sports, Social & Wellbeing (SSW) Committee

At Virteffic, the wellbeing of our staff is a top priority. Virteffic was set up to offer team members more flexible working hours and a better life-work balance.

Since we started to recruit and Virteffic grew into a team of more than just Tess, the focus has always been to look after and appreciate the team members. Our sports, social and well-being committee was set up early to help with this.

Working flexibly allows our team members to make time for their wellbeing and mindfulness on their schedule, and we have a monthly wellbeing topic focus to make sure we always keep it forefront in our minds.
